EWB 271 LOST CLASSICS THE NEFILIM ZOON

Ralph Schmidt returns to the regular stream this week! A while back we did an episode on Fields of the Nephilim, one of our mutually favorite bands.  This episode is a follow up to that discussion. During the band’s hiatus in the mid-90’s, Carl McCoy formed The Nefilim and release Zoon, their only album.  It’s a unique coda in his career, that often times goes overlooked despite its far reaching influence.

Paul Aloisio of Restless Spirit returns!  In addition to our love of music, Paul and I are major horror fans.  With the release of the latest Hellraiser looming, it was timely that we give out reflections on the Hellraiser franchise, the excellent Clive Barker novella The Hellbound Heart, and expectations of the new movie.

EWB 269 Jackie Smit Into the Necrosphere

This week we have an epic. Jackie Smit of Into the Necrosphere joins us for a deep discussion that needed to happen in response to some of the Black Metal Old Guard, specifically Ihsahn, stating that the genre is dead. For the record, I am a massive Ihsahn fan, Emperor are one of the bands that have influenced my creative output on a profound level.

 

Black Metal is probably the most progressive form of extreme music. Jackie and I give examples of how the genre has continued to raise the bar with each year, and give examples of some of the luminary bands that continue to elevate Black Metal and extreme music in general.

EWB 268Andrew Hernandez and Mike Goncalves Scorpion Throne

This week, Mike Goncalves and Andrew Hernandez join me for an epic talk. Mike and Andrew are my teammates in Scorpion Throne, a new ongoing project.  Earlier this year, I dropped a 4-song EP on bandcamp and we’re currently  working on new material for something to hit next year.

 

Both of these gentlemen are dear friends of mine: Andrew and I travelled the world together in Tombs, put in countless hour in the practice space and studio and now I finally have the opportunity to work with him again.

My good friend Jesse Matthewson joins us this week.  Jesse and his brother Shane are the founding members of KEN Mode, a veteran band that has been crushing skulls for 23 years.  As usual, it was a pleasure to catch up and talk about their forthcoming record NULL.

EWB 266 CHRIS MORRISON MOTHER OF GRAVES

You know, sometimes social media is good for something.  Mother of Graves showed up in my Instagram feed one day; intriguing imagery, so I checked out the music and was blown away.  The music is heavy, dark and has atmosphere to spare.  I dug further and discovered that Chris Morrison of Harakiri was in the band. Chris and I go way back, our bands have played numerous shows together, we’re stayed at each other’s houses, all of that stuff.

It was a pleasure to catch up with Chris.  By all mean, do yourself a favor and check out Mother of Graves.

EWB 265 Aaron Keay Homma Killitorous

Aaron Keay-Homma of Killitorous joins us this week.  Aaron and I were on tour together earlier this year. Of course, I’m referring to the Origin, Abysmal Dawn, Tombs, Killitorous Tour.  Aaron and his crew had a hard run, plagued by mechanical problems, van failures and just overall hard times, but they kept rolling.  Aside from the general respect I for them because they’re such a sick band, they earned a more profound respect for their sheer will. 

Little did I know that the story behind the scenes was way more wild and intense than I could have imagine.  Check it out.

This week, David Grossman joins us for an epic discussion.  David is a member of the long-standing Philly-based band Rosetta and, additionally, he is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt.  We go deep into a myriad of subjects including the concept of novelty, competition, training and various life philosophies.

EWB 263 John Adams & Toby Poser Wonder Wheel Productions

John Adam and Toby Poser of the Adams Family / Wonder Wheel Production join us this week.  If are a Necromaniacs listener, you will undoubtedly be familiar with them. I’m had them, along with Zelda their daughter, on a guests  and we’ve covered two of their excellent films, this year’s folk horror Hellbender and The Deeper You Dig from 2019.  We shifted the conversation a bit this time around to talk about music; during my previous chats with them, I discovered that we have a lot of the same interests when it comes to music, so I thought it would be fun to cover that here on EWB.

EWB 262 Karl Haikara Sol Nox

The last couple of years have been interesting to say the least.  Amidst all of the anxiety, heartache and isolation that I went thru some of the positives were meeting some really cool people.  Karl and I connected, during the depths of the pandemic, over our love of weird fiction, dark music and the occult.  We routinely traded ideas about left hand path philosophy, discussed our favorite writers, bands, films and all of the miscellanea that you can probably imagine.

In this episode, we go deep.  Notably, we talk about Karl’s new podcast Sol Nox and his impending podcast dedicated to Robert E. Howard’s mightiest character Conan of Cimmeria.
